People in our society are accustomed to the medical model of healthcare and they go to the doctor because they are sick. Under this standard approach, doctors focus on the presenting complaint, or disease, and take a medical history and, if necessary, order lab tests in order to make a diagnosis and begin treatment, usually with drugs and sometimes surgery.
At the Center, we expand the disease focus of the medical model into mindbody model which focuses on health promotion as a key part of the treatment of disease. The natural wisdom of the body is a symphony of complex systems working together: digestion, immunity, hormones, neurotransmitters, detoxification systems and much more. You cannot isolate these systems as they work together to produce health or disease. Therefore physicians at the Center will take additional history exploring diet, nutrition, and exercise. They will evaluate digestion, immunity, and hormone balance. They will look for nutrient deficiencies, heavy metal burden and possible exposure to chemical toxins. And, importantly, they will also review patterns of psychological stress that contribute to illness. This approach empowers the patient to understand the many factors that coalesce into disease and enable them to make important lifestyle and mind style changes that support treatment and recovery.
They will also order appropriate laboratory tests to confirm and expand the medical impressions from the patient history.
